Empire armies often include large numbers of missile troops, armed with either Handguns or Crossbows. These troops support the larger infantry units as either detatchments or in larger units that form part of the battle line.
Handgunners and Crossbowmen provide a versatile and reliable bastion of fire for your Empire army. They work well in large units were they form a solid line of fire or as smaller detachments supporting your State Troops. Crossbowmen have a longer range so if you're up against a missile based army then these might be the best choice. Handgunners can penetrate thick armour so if you're expecting lots of elite troops assaulting your lines, then take them. Neither unit type can move and fire, so be sure to set them up with good lines of sight in mind.
